Stephen Brooks, Master Instructor and Head of the Association, has trained with some of the finest Masters of the Martial Arts.
In the mid-sixties Stephen began his training at the Hillcrest Boxing Club in Coulsdon, Surrey with coach Billy English. He continued to box with long time friend and training partner Kevin Brewerton at the world-famous Thomas A. Beckett gym in the Old Kent Road, London. By the mid-seventies Stephen had become fascinated with Kung-fu and joined the Croydon Lau Gar Kung-fu School run by the legendary Neville Wray. Throughout the 70s and 80s Stephen competed successfully with team-mates Neville Wray, Kevin Brewerton and Peter Edwards, all of whom later became multiple World Champions.
In 1985 Stephen expanded his Martial Arts knowledge by training with Karate Master and President of the E.K.K.A, Mick Blackwell, and former Chairman of the English Karate Governing Body, Master Instructor Billy Brennan. Whilst training with the E.K.K.A, Stephen also studied Ju-Jitsu and at the same time Kickboxing with former World Super-Heavyweight Champion Richard Vince.
Stephen established Phoenix Schools of Martial Arts in 1985, combining a wealth of knowledge and experience to create what is today one of the most respected Associations in Great Britain. Since 1985 Phoenix has grown steadily and now has many classes throughout the South of England. In setting up Phoenix Martial Arts, Stephen achieved one of his lifetime goals with the creation of a versatile and well rounded system that can be practiced and enjoyed by a wide range of people. He has embraced the teaching skills passed down the generations and fused them with new teaching techniques to ensure students progress in an enjoyable and safe environment.
In January 2008 Deputy Mayor Councilor Brian Udell officially opened the Phoenix Schools of Martial Arts Centre of Excellence in Croydon, a full time state of the art facility offering renowned quality of Instruction together with a superb choice of lessons .
Today Phoenix schools of Martial Arts is popularising the enjoyable and exciting sport of kickboxing. Striving to set new goals and challenges, whether fighting for charity, winning at tournaments or helping students to achieve their ambitions.
